A.A. Today: Effectiveness

aa_today_on_recoverywise

AA Today are daily readings from the book “Twenty-Four Hours A Day.”

“Twenty-Four Hours A Day is intended for members of Alcoholics Anonymous as a help in their program of living one day at a time.  It is designed for those who want to start each day with a few minutes of thought, meditation, and prayer.”

A.A. will lose some of its effectiveness if I do not do my share.  Where am I failing?  Are there some things I do not feel like doing?  Am I held back by self-consciousness or fear?  Self-consciousness is a form of pride.  It is a fear that something may happen to you.  What happens to you is not very important.  The impression you make on others does not depend so much on the kind of a job you do as on your sincerity and honesty of purpose.  Am I holding back because I am afraid of not making a good impression?

Meditation for the Day

Look to God for the true power that will make you effective.  See no other wholly dependable supply of strength.  That is the secret of a truly effective life.  And you, in your turn, will be used to help many others find effectiveness.  Whatever spiritual help you need, whatever spiritual help you desire for others, look to God.  Seek that God’s will be done in your life and seek that your will conforms to His.  Failures come from depending too much on your own strength.

Prayer for the Day

I pray that I may feel that nothing good is too much for me if I look to God for help.  I pray that I may be effective through His guidance.

A.A. Today: Give It Away

When I find myself thinking about taking a drink, I say to myself: “Don’t reach out and take that problem back. You’ve given it to God and there’s nothing you can do about it.” So I forget about the drink. One of the most important parts of the A.A. program is to give our drink problem to God honestly and fully and never to reach out and take the problem back to ourselves. If we let God have it and keep it for good and then cooperate with Him, we’ll stay sober. Have I determined not to take the drink problem back to myself?

Meditation for the Day

Constant effort is necessary if I am to grow spiritually and develop my spiritual life. I must keep the spiritual rules persistently, perseveringly, lovingly, patiently, and hopefully. By keeping them, every mountain of difficulty shall be laid low, the rough places of poverty of spirit shall be made smooth, and all who know me shall know that God is the Lord of all my ways. To get close to the spirit of God is to find life and healing and strength.

Prayer for the Day

I pray that God’s spirit may be everything to my soul. I pray that God’s spirit may grow within me.

Higher Power: Comfort

higher_power_on_recoverywise

All of us have faced disappointment and failure.  Usually during these times we feel very alone, sometimes even abandoned by the ones who are closest to us.

God feels distant.  All we want is for someone to take us by the hand and tell us, “Things will not always be this way.  You are going to be okay.

You are going to feel happy again.”  We want someone to offer us hope for something beyond what we can see and feel at this moment.

God offers us this kind of comfort directly through his Word.  In Psalm 30, David praises God for lifting him up and saving his soul, restoring him and bestowing favor.

He said these things to God after experiencing his own dark night of the soul, when he felt that he was as low as he could go.  God came to him and restored his joy.

He will do the same for you.

CHALLENGE:  Email words of encouragement to someone whom you know is hurting.  Let them know they are not alone.
