Poetry: Father

Poetry My Father

Did your father comfort you
in the dead of night
did your father visit long
make you feel alright.

My father cold just a bit
his heart was very far
my father gone ’til sunset
constant as a star.

Did your father guide you
so pitfalls were just a few
did your father enforce rules
teach you what to do.

My father shared few lessons
lost my way sometimes
but he handled business
paid me for my crimes.

Did your father love you well
all throughout your days
did your father let you know
give you all his praise.

My father never loved enough
sometimes it makes me sad
but he did what he could
and just with what he had.

As I’ve gotten older
grey upon the brow
dawn eclipsed the dusk
I understand him now.
