AA Today: Bargain With Higher Power

aa_today_on_recoverywise

AA Today are daily readings from the bookTwenty-Four Hours A Day.”

“Twenty-Four Hours A Day is intended for members of Alcoholics Anonymous as a help in their program of living one day at a time.  It is designed for those who want to start each day with a few minutes of thought, meditation, and prayer.”

March 3, 2021

After we’ve made a surrender, the drink problem is out of our hands and in the hands of our Higher Power. The thing we have to do is to be sure that we never reach out and take the problem back into our own hands. Leave it in God’s hands. Whenever I’m tempted to take a drink, I must say to myself: “I can’t do that. I’ve made a bargain with God not to drink. I know God doesn’t want me to drink and so I won’t do it.” At the same time I say a little prayer to God for the strength needed to keep the bargain with Him. Am I going to keep my bargain with God?

Meditation for the Day

I will try to grow in this new life. I will think of spiritual things often and unconsciously I will grow. The nearer I get to the new life, the more I will see my unfitness. My sense of failure is a sure sign that I am growing in the new life. IT is only struggle that hurst. In sloth–physical, mental, or spiritual–there is no sense of failure or discomfort. With struggle and effort, I am conscious not of strength but of weakness until I am really living the new life. But in the struggle, I can always rely on the power of God to help. me.

Prayer for the Day

I pray that I may see signs of my growth in the new life. I pray that I may always keep trying to grow.

Living Life Well: Your Gut

Gems for living a life of wellness. Lessons I have learned, or am learning, during this crazy journey through life.

We have deep within us a wellspring of wisdom.  Some would call it intuition.  Learning to listen to your intuition is a slowly learned process.  I can’t tell you how many times I  didn’t listen to that tiny inner voice or paid attention to that tiny feeling that was trying to tell me that I was about to do something stupid.

Deep down you know when you’ve made a bad decision.  You know when you’ve got to apologize, make amends, put things right.  Deep down you know when you are about to do something that goes against your grain.  But you do it anyway!  Often, with unpleasant results.  Trust me, I have been there, done that, bought the shot glass.

If you can tap into that inner voice or feeling the feeling, you’ll find it can help.  It will become more than a mindless parrot perched on your shoulder, chanting “You messed up again” after the event.

Try running stuff past your inner you, before doing things and see what reaction you get.  As with anything, the more you do this, the easier it is to accomplish.

I want to clarify here.  When I say listen, I don’t mean listen to what goes on in your head.  Now that really is where the insanity lies.  No, I mean a stiller, quieter voice.  For some it’s more a feeling than a voice–what we sometimes call gut instinct.

“Follow your gut” is advice you may have heard before.  I was taught a method whereby before I am about to make a decision, I go in front of the mirror and ask myself if it’s a good idea.

Trust me, when you are standing in front of the mirror and asking yourself out loud your own opinion or advice on something, you will find you will never steer yourself wrong!
